La figura di Thomas Jefferson risulta emblematica degli scambi umani e intellettuali tra le due sponde dell’Atlantico, i quali, iniziati con l’illuminismo scozzese, proseguiti per tutto il Settecento riformatore, trovarono il loro apice con la massiccia partecipazione, militare e ideale, della Francia alla guerra di indipendenza americana. Questo flusso di uomini e idee contribuì, successivamente, a innestare in Francia spinte riformatrici e rivoluzionarie che condizionarono, in forme diverse, la Rivoluzione del 1789. Di questo cotesto Thomas Jefferson risulta figura centrale, quale trait- d’union tra due culture, fatte di slanci giusnaturalistici per la libertà e l’uguaglianza ma anche di involuzioni liberticide, come quella macroscopica del mantenimento, sia i America che nelle colonie francesi, della schiavitù.
