The article examines the head of a child made of white marble, from a private Roman collection. The formal and iconographical analysis of the sculpture leads us to conclude that the head was part of a statue high approximately 85 cm, made around 280 B.C. It was dedicated in a sanctuary as a proof of gratefulness or in order to invoke god’s protection on the represented child. A particular attention is dedicated to the headdress, that is characterized by a melon-coiffure, adorned by a braid surrounding the head. This hairstyle was preferred by girls and young ladies. The appendix gives a list of statues and heads of children which show the same kind of headdress.
