Abstract

The studies of Erasmus’ work, which produce far-reaching erudite reflections and valuable textual analyses destined above all to a specialized public, contribute in Spain to a re-reading of the past which bypasses literature and national boundaries. At the time when Spanish intellectuals dedicate themselves to the reconstruction of their History to legitimate a controversial regime, those in exile question the causes of a Civil War which resulted in Spain’s isolation from emerging Europe. E new “European mind” manifests itself among historians and Hispanists, aimed to free the Peninsula from cultural and literary stereotypes seen as culprits of acritical nationalism. In imposing themselves as historical categories, the notions of Spanish Erasmism and Golden Age call into question the symbolism of the past and open a problem of periodization, which feeds into numerous interpretations.
