Abstract

The cataloguing of the churches of the Roman suburbs and Lazio into C.A.R.E. project has been a significant part of the research on «Storia e Archeologia globale dei paesaggi rurali in Italia fra Tardoantico e Medioevo. Sistemi integrati di fonti, metodi e tecnologie per uno sviluppo sostenibile» (“History and Archaeology of the global rural landscapes in Italy from Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Integrated systems of sources, methods and technologies for a sustainable development”), because there is no doubt that the religious buildings represent the more dynamics causes of the landscape transformations during the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. In the Roman suburbs within the eighth mile we were surveyed about one hundred and seventy churches, which, for the great disparity of the documentation and the heterogeneity of the monumental structures, often influenced in the architectural developments by preexisting contexts, have previously required the definition of specific methods study and significant typological groupings. The census of the churches of Lazio is carried out through the analysis of the literary sources and the detailed monumental studies in some areas of Southern Lazio and Sabina; it have highlighted the different functional types of religious buildings and pointed out the presence of networks of churches in the territories of Tres Tabernae and Fondi during the Early Middle Ages.
