The controlled adsorption of molecules of single volatile compounds (namely ethanol, hexane and amines) or of a mixture of them on Langmuir-Schäfer (LS) and Langmuir- Blodgett (LB) films of Zn-tetraphenylporphyrins produces a modification of the film optical anisotropy, as revealed by Reflectance Anisotropy Spectroscopy (RAS). We have already showed (see references) that the optical anisotropy of LS-LB samples is settled by the molecular package occurring in the film. Nevertheless, if porphyrin film is exposed to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), the molecule – molecule interaction between the film and organic vapours modify the LS-LB molecular package, and RAS signal variations can be detected. In this thesis, we show that the more pronounced modifications of optical anisotropy spectra occur at well defined energies (depending upon the analite, namely ethanol hexane and amines), when porphyrin films are exposed to a single VOC. This occurrences are discussed in terms of variations of structural and electronic properties of the molecular layer [2,3]. In particular, the results show how the various VOCs affect differently the J and H aggregates present in the organic film, thus producing characteristic variation of RAS spectra. Moreover, we observe that the effect of a mixture of organic vapors, on the optical properties of LS-LB films, can be interpreted in terms of a linear superposition of the different RAS signals, previously acquired when just a specific VOC has been used [4]. These experiments show the potentiality of RAS, in terms of selectivity, for the direct detection of VOCs during their interaction with solid state porphyrin films.
