The paper investigates the ancient biographical tradition on Anytos, who in 399 BC, together with Meletos and Lykon, charged Socrates with for impiety, atheism, and corruption of the young. Although portrayed by the Academic and Peripatetic literature as hostile to Socrates for personal and mean reasons, Anytos actually was a patriot and a clever politician, who boldly fought against the Thirty and after the restoration of democracy was the main collaborator of Thrasybulus, showing great moderation against the supporters of the defeated faction. Despite these indubitable merits, after the death of Socrates Anytos’ life and career were systematically rewritten, up to create from nothing the legend of his shameful exile to Heraclea Pontica.
