Geldhandel« und Kreditwesen in Rom im 12./13. Jahrhundert. Aufstieg und Niedergang der römischen mercatores

The essay analyzes the credit activities practiced by many Roman citizens between the eleventh and the thirteenth century. From the period of the “Gregorian Reform” the papal taxation and the greediness apparatus curial became gradually more and more pervasive towards all Christendom. The Apostolic See thus became a formidable asset for the development of credit activities of international level. A large number of Roman citizens were able to take advantage of this situation and many of them reached a significant level, both as international “mercatores” and in the social and political sphere of their city. The essay concludes by assuming the causes that led to the rapid decline of these financial operators during the second half of the thirteenth century.

Il saggio analizza le attività creditizie praticate da molti cittadini romani tra XI e XIII secolo. A partire dal periodo della “Riforma Gregoriana” la fiscalità pontificia e l’esosità dell’apparato curiale divennero via via sempre più pervasivi nei confronti di tutta la Cristianità. La Sede apostolica divenne in tal un formidabile volano per lo sviluppo di attività creditizie di grande rilievo e su scala internazionale. Un gran numero di cittadini romani seppero approfittare di questa situazione e molti di loro raggiunsero un livello eccezionale, sia come “mercatores” internazionali sia nell’ambito sociale e politico della loro città. Il saggio si conclude ipotizzando le cause che portarono al rapido declino di questi operatori finanziari nel corso della seconda metà del XIII secolo.
