Construction discontinuities in architectural exteriors are the preferred loci for ornament that expresses the building's specifìc functional, structural and representative connotations. The empty window spaces, recomposed caesuras of the string courses and windowsill markers, airy diaphragms of balustrades and the reassuring solidity of brackets, consoles and cantons are translated into robust compendiums of architectural structure thanks to ashlars perfectly carved in stone or skillfully molded in stucco. This decorative apparatus is organically linked to the arrangement of the walls, translating structural weaknesses into strongly characterizing elements of the façade and its architectural identity. Frames, corbels, brackets, cantons, rustication, and balustrades are the result of well thought out variations on recurrent and consolidated themes, orchestrated according to the selfcelebratory intentions of the owners and the specific material and structural features of the building. The display of stone ornament translates into the certain and distinctive mark of a precise social message. This article investigates the role and function of stone ornament in the overall structure of palaces, but also its relationship with the urban environment in which it creates an architectural scenography intended to explicate the principle of convenientia, that is, of the conformity of architecture to the patron's requisites far social representation.
Le discontinuità costruttive dell’involucro edilizio costituiscono il luogo privilegiato di ornamenti che ne dichiarano la specifica connotazione funzionale, strutturale e rappresentativa. I vuoti delle finestre, le ricomposte cesure di cornici marcapiano o marcadavanzale, gli ariosi diaframmi delle balaustre e la rassicurante solidità di mensole e cantonali si traducono in robusti compendi della struttura architettonica grazie a conci lapidei perfettamente scolpiti, oppure sapientemente modellati nello stucco. Tale corredo si coniuga organicamente all’aggettivazione delle pareti, traducendo le debolezze strutturali in elementi fortemente caratterizzanti l’impaginato di prospetto e la sua identità architettonica. Cornici, mostre, mensole, cantonali, bugnati e balaustre costituiscono l’esito di meditate variazioni su temi ricorrenti e consolidati, orchestrate sugli intenti autocelebrativi delle famiglie proprietarie e sulle specifiche caratteristiche materiali e strutturali dell’edificio. L’esibizione degli ornati lapidei si traduce in segno certo e distintivo di un preciso messaggio sociale. Questo contributo indaga ruolo e funzione degli ornati lapidei nella compagine complessiva del palazzo, ma anche il rapporto con l’intorno urbano nel quale danno vita a mirate scenografie architettoniche, esplicitando il principio della convenientia, cioè della conformità dell’architettura alle esigenze di rappresentazione sociale del committente.
