Nowadays, the actors acting in the Industrial System (IS) have to be able to understand and control their way of work in order to exploit economic potential opportunities and to be competitive in the huge international market. Therefore, the analysis, design and optimisation of ISs require methods, approaches, formalisms and tools to effective represent the main IS issues. Due to this fact, new needs arose for companies thus they would use adapted models considering physical and logical components of the company such as resources, products, information etc. Clearly, the goal of these models is to understand, engineer, evaluate, optimise and control the whole organisation of the company. The main topic of this thesis is to focus on Supply Chain issues (i.e. a particular Industrial System) by introducing a new effective interpretative model. In fact, nowadays it can be hard to analyse a manufacturing system by using a classical centralized approach. The manufacturing system is often composed of different entities, that usually are heterogeneous and they have local information and goals. In particular, in this Ph.D. thesis, we introduce the Autonomous Agents (AA) and Multi Agent System (MAS) concepts. They were preliminary introduced in the Distributed Artificial Intelligence research field and today they can be exploit in different application settings where it is necessary to decentralized the control and the decisional processes. By using a MAS we have to introduce a coordination mechanism. In fact, each agent in order to pursue its own goals has to collaborate with the others agents in the MAS. Among the different collaborative approaches, we introduce a particular economic model. Due to this fact, we focus on the Auction Model where the agents submit bids in order to obtain the resource. Classical auctions are based on a protocol and on a message definitions. This dissertation is organized as follows. In Chapter 1 an introduction to the theory of Supply Chain is presented. Then, in Chapter 2 the main auction theory definitions are given. Chapter 3 is devoted to the combinatorial auction problem classification. Finally, Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 are devoted to the presentation of two different applications. The former one is the application of a MAS, and combinatorial auction theory to the distributed multi-project scheduling problem. The latter Chapter introduces a reverse combinatorial auction for a procurement process in a manufacturing environment.
