Using both the rich monastic archives and the results of a long archaeological escavation, the article illustrates the history of the village of Villamagna, which is peculiar from several points of view: because in Latium, the tenacious survival of an open village in a world where castras multiplied, imposing themselves more and more exclusively as the main form of organisation of power and population, is strange; and because the society of the Village seems devoid of social diversification, very simple at the level of material culture, and clearly subordinate to monastic power.

Abstract
Using both the rich monastic archives and the results of a long archaeological escavation, the article illustrates the history of the village of Villamagna, which is peculiar from several points of view: because in Latium, the tenacious survival of an open village in a world where castras multiplied, imposing themselves more and more exclusively as the main form of organisation of power and population, is strange; and because the society of the Village seems devoid of social diversification, very simple at the level of material culture, and clearly subordinate to monastic power.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
