In this contribution, research activities and trends in the field of RF and microwave power amplifiers design are discussed. Strategies for high efficiency are focused and the results attained presented, showing state-of-the-art power amplifier design, utilising GaAs or GaN technologies. Some “evergreen” design solutions, recently rediscovered for advanced communication systems, as the Doherty and Envelope Tracking approaches, are revisited.
