The aim of thsi article is to examine the construction of identities in Harold Pinter's "The Birthday Party". It reviews the stylistic treatment of identity and the individual in drama and proposes a method for analysing identity in literary talk in terms of the speech behaviour of what Goffman (1981) calls a "figure". It illustrates how the method can be applied to the construction of the discursive identities of the main characters in "The Birthday Party" using the categories of "discourse" and "situated" identities used by Zimmerman (1998).

Abstract

The aim of thsi article is to examine the construction of identities in Harold Pinter's "The Birthday Party". It reviews the stylistic treatment of identity and the individual in drama and proposes a method for analysing identity in literary talk in terms of the speech behaviour of what Goffman (1981) calls a "figure". It illustrates how the method can be applied to the construction of the discursive identities of the main characters in "The Birthday Party" using the categories of "discourse" and "situated" identities used by Zimmerman (1998).
