Studies on histological changes of the rotator cuff attempt to define the pathogenesis of cuff rupture, the relative frequency of partial and total ones, the age of occurrence of tendon disorders; Authors distinguish recent and chronic disease processes on the basis of frequency, distribution, location and type of degenerative lesions found, supporting the intrinsic theory, based on the pro- gressive degeneration of the tendon tissue, or the extrinsic one, according to which the reason of the lesions would be the subacromial impinge- ment.
