The volume has a twofold purpose: on the one hand, it aims to highlight the variety of narrative, compositional, and conceptual devices that Plato employs in the Theaetetus and to study from this perspective the ways in which the characters of the dialogue lead their arguments and come to their respective outcomes; on the other hand, it examines the question of the epistemological value of perception, which is one of the main topics of the dialogue. The basic idea is that the compositional aspect and the philosophical content of the Theaetetus are to be considered in close connection: the effort to reject any form of sensism and the need to justify the possibility of a cognitive ascent starting from sense experience are actually at the origin both of the modes by which Plato handles the problem of aisthesis and of the argumentative strategies used in the Theaetetus.

Abstract
The volume has a twofold purpose: on the one hand, it aims to highlight the variety of narrative, compositional, and conceptual devices that Plato employs in the Theaetetus and to study from this perspective the ways in which the characters of the dialogue lead their arguments and come to their respective outcomes; on the other hand, it examines the question of the epistemological value of perception, which is one of the main topics of the dialogue. The basic idea is that the compositional aspect and the philosophical content of the Theaetetus are to be considered in close connection: the effort to reject any form of sensism and the need to justify the possibility of a cognitive ascent starting from sense experience are actually at the origin both of the modes by which Plato handles the problem of aisthesis and of the argumentative strategies used in the Theaetetus.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
