New topographical data concerning the area north of the Mausoleum of Augustus In 1838 the Camera Apostolica began the construction of a new building – afterwards well-known as “Ferro di cavallo” i.e. Horseshoe – in the so called area of Nuova Ripetta or Legnara, which was the port intended to house the firewood north of the port of Ripetta. The Architect Pietro Camporese Jr. discovered in the foundations a network of ancient walls, floors, columns, inscriptions, etc. The general plan and other unpublished documents are of great use to reconstruct the area north of the Mausoleum of Augustus.
