Nowadays the methodology of the study, cataloguing and archiving of stage costumes is based on sectorial principles: clothing is examined by historians of style and fashion, whilst fashion plates and scene sketches drawn by the artist are analysed by art historians, and so on. On the contrary, it is necessary to approach the study of stage costumes in an organic way, considering the performative context for which they were created. In this sense, useful clues can be provided by the history of nineteenth-century Russian theatre
Oggi il metodo di studio, la catalogazione e l’archiviazione del costume teatrale si basa su principi settoriali: l’abito è competenza degli storici dello stile e della moda, il figurino e gli schizzi di scena dell’artista sono analizzati dagli storici dell’arte e così via. È necessario, al contrario, studiare il costume teatrale in modo organico, cioè nell’ambito dello spettacolo per il quale fu creato.
