This article analyses the case of the Italian Red Brigades as an example of extreme left terrorism of Marxist-Leninist inspiration. The analysis emphasizes the role of ideology as a mental framework that explains the action of terrorists and presents them as "terrorists by vocation." In other words, those, who having the possibility of leading a comfortable life, choose terrorist action to placate a "spiritual" need.
