This Ph.D. thesis belongs to the research field of experimental study of more or less laminarized jets in still air. In the past, the existence of an initial region where the flow velocity doesn’t vary significantly in spite of the interaction with the surrounding air has been demonstrated. The length of this region has been linked to the Reynolds number based on the initial hydraulic diameter of the jet. In the present work, an analogous experimental study concerning methane diffusion flames in still air produced by a wind tunnel (with grids which damp turbulence) and a simple pipe (with the same exit diameter) has been carried on, in order to estimate the influence of initial turbulence level on fluid dynamics. Both the wind tunnel and the pipe are tapered in order to study the behavior of the flames when the methane jet suddenly interacts with the ambient air. We also intend to emphasize the effect of the thickness of the sheet of the slot of the wind tunnel at the exit, so a straight slot (without tapering) and a tapered slot will be used. The flames will be filmed with a digital cam recorder, and their height, the length of the undisturbed region and, in the case of lifted flames, the distance between the flame base and the slot exit will be estimated. This work will end with a spectrum analysis of the sound produced by the flames in order to show the influence of the Reynolds number on the acoustic emission. The thesis is composed of three chapters. In the first one, the structure of air jets in air at rest and of diffusion and lifted flames will be described. At the end of the chapter, a short introduction to acoustics of jets will made. In the second chapter, the whole experimental apparatus will be described. The attention will mainly be focused on the gas plant and on the project of the wind tunnel. In the third chapter, the results relative to the wind tunnel with the tapered tip and the simple pipe (also tapered) and to the straight slot of the wind tunnel will be presented, analyzed and compared. As a conclusion, the results will be summarized and a few developments of the present work will be proposed.

Abstract

This Ph.D. thesis belongs to the research field of experimental study of more or less laminarized jets in still air.
