The paper presents a critical survey of the terms and concepts used within the discipline of ethnomusicology in order to identify the "kind" of music studied by the discipline itself: "primitive". "ethnic", "traditional" etc. All these concepts are considered by the author as disguises of the myth of one and the same "otherness" which is supposed to characterize all the musics different from the western art music. Only overcoming this myth the scholars will be able to face the complexity of nowadays Worldwide musical scene and improve the theoretical and methodological tools at their disposal.
