The essay deals with the problem of evil in Alessandro Manzoni’s philosophical system, whose importance is evicted by both his works of thought and the artistic ones. This weight doesn’t exist because the writer’s reflection goes from an already acquired religion to satisfy a need of justice; on the contrary, the total disintegration of justice has directed his soul towards something that can be found only in a “beyond common man”. Poetry, like Manzoni himself wants, is strictly linked with a denunciation of an evil; which is the same the man has suffered since his appearance on earth, which leaves historical ages out of consideration and which is, therefore, absolute. In other words, the crux of the question is not in Manzoni’s choice of Christian religion as an unassailable landing-place, thanks to its principles that cannot be proved: Christian revelation, in fact, is the constructive aspect of a consequential speech whose fundamental pars destruens is the essential limitation of human being (limitation that Christian religion calls “original sin”) about the correct view of moral (the interaction between man and the world that aims at an authentic happiness). Manzoni’s paradox, that derives from the conviction according to which the natural sense of ego does not entail objectivity of judgement (opinion that Christian religion rejects thanks to the summarizing commandment of charity), consists in the fact that the sacrifice of ego really subtends the true pleasure. This can mean two things: the first one, as an act of faith, is that Christian charity assures a positive eternal life; but the most important one is that charity can open the only possibility to a superhuman vision (that means the destruction of ego), which assures the “allegrezza” (inner joy) that prefigures the hereafter on earth and allows the end of mechanicalism of passions and the assertion of freedom in history. Evil, according to Manzoni, is as necessary as reality. But, if the essential dimension of evil is the same of reality, if the ontology of evil comes before the possibility of justice and leaving it out of consideration, it means that the “original sin” of mankind is the constituent state of history, and it has got an absolute character. Really, the problem is that the religious constructive part of Manzoni’s philosophical system is derived, and does not belong to human being: the spiritual landing to such dimension is a Dantesque “trasumanare” (becoming a superhuman being) that places man beyond his nature, someway giving him the divine view which doesn’t belong to him or, like Christian religion says, he has lost since he committed the original sin.
