The genetic structure of populations of two sympatric rodent species (Apodemus flavicollis and A. sylvaticus) living in four different biotopes has been investigated by eleetrophoretic analysis of 38 loci. Among the 17 polymorphic loci observed Me-1, Got-1 and Est-3 for A. flavicollis and Got-1, Est-3, Mpi for A. sylvaticus showed a high degree of variation across the biotopes. The values of interpopulation genetic distance and estimated gene flow suggest that natural selection could have an important role in explaining such phenomena.

Abstract

The genetic structure of populations of two sympatric rodent species (Apodemus flavicollis and A. sylvaticus) living in four different biotopes has been investigated by eleetrophoretic analysis of 38 loci. Among the 17 polymorphic loci observed Me-1, Got-1 and Est-3 for A. flavicollis and Got-1, Est-3, Mpi for A. sylvaticus showed a high degree of variation across the biotopes. The values of interpopulation genetic distance and estimated gene flow suggest that natural selection could have an important role in explaining such phenomena.
