Abstract

During the last ten years the research in the field of satellite communications, navigation and Earth/Space observation has been pointed towards the integration of systems and applications; this challenging target requires a complex communication structure able to realise the so called “System of Systems”. The important issue of “integration” is the key point of the evolution of satellite systems, it involves also the terrestrial networks in order to realise a cooperative global information infrastructure; in this frame broadband satellite communication plays a key role. Ka band (27-40 GHz) can be considered as the current emerging standard for satellite communication systems while there are a good number of systems, most of them are for dual-use (civil and defence) applications, operating in Q/V band (40-75 GHz); in the near future the need for broadband satellite services and the growing saturation of lower frequency bands will make it mandatory the identification of the main concepts, innovative systems and technological evolution that will lead the change towards EHF (“beyond Ka band”) satellite communication systems. This work has been performed with the aim to analyse the interest in future EHF satellite communication systems and evaluate the innovative scientific concepts that arise in this frame. As stated before the scientific research has to be pointed towards “beyond Q/V-band” systems, being these frequency ranges the current technological/scientific frontier; in this frame this work has been oriented towards the exploitation of W-band (75-110 GHz) for satellite communication systems. This frequency band has very interesting features for research purposes, being never used for telecommunication applications but being extensively used (in particular the 90-95 GHz range) in radio-astronomy and radar applications.
