The article presents the results of a research on the role that digital media play in making visible the invisible effects of multiple sclerosis (MS) at different stages of the disease. Twenty in-depth interviews with MS patients in Sicily and Sardinia and an ethnographic analysis of three Facebook groups of Sicilian and Sardinian patients were conducted. The results, which will be illustrated in this paper, point to a central role of digital media in discovering and living with multiple sclerosis, as both a valuable resource for finding information and as a tool for building mutual aid relationships

Abstract

The article presents the results of a research on the role that digital media play in making visible the invisible effects of multiple sclerosis (MS) at different stages of the disease. Twenty in-depth interviews with MS patients in Sicily and Sardinia and an ethnographic analysis of three Facebook groups of Sicilian and Sardinian patients were conducted. The results, which will be illustrated in this paper, point to a central role of digital media in discovering and living with multiple sclerosis, as both a valuable resource for finding information and as a tool for building mutual aid relationships
