The Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights, adopted by acclamation by UNESCO’s General Conference on 19 October 2005, is characterized by elements which outline an original, coherent perspective. This document, albeit containing the kind of limitations that always accompany a consensus reached at the cost of some simplifications, sheds light on some of the essential reasons why bioethics, which today is necessarily confronted with the global scope of unprecedented scientific progress, represents a privileged observation point for looking at the protection of the dignity, rights, and fundamental freedoms of all human beings, starting with those people who are just beginning their lives and are, for this reason, the most vulnerable and exposed to the inequalities that the 2030 United Nations Agenda points out as the critical challenge to take on and overcome.
